The Bike Dress - Simplicity 2059

Upon seeing this Bike Lane Dress from Anthropologie. I fell in love. I knew I had to have it or at least something similar. At $158.00 I wasn't going to purchase it myself. That's just too many dollars for one dress.

I went though my pattern stash to find something similar. I wanted straps and loved the a-line skirt. Straps & a-line were my only requirements. Luckily, I have an obsession with buying lots of patterns when they are $0.99 at Joann's. So I have a pretty large stash to choose from. There is just never an excuse to buy a pattern full price. Fabric, yes but patterns, never.

The fabric I decided on is pretty thin. It's organic and definitely needed to be underlined. I taught myself how to underline. I'm not sure if I do it the professional way or not. I just make things up as I go along. Basically you just cut your pattern out twice. Just the bodice pieces though. Next you match the pieces up as exact as possible and pin them together. Serge the edges and treat the pieces as one. Not too hard, right?

I always end up using a lot of pins because I am always worried about bubbles in my fabric showing up while serving. I just do this for good measure.

Hopefully I'll have this dress finished over the weekend. I'm so excited! xo, rv

A Surprise Date

This week I have midterms. I've been running wild trying to get everything accomplished. Somedays I never have a free second. The weather's getting warmer.

I'm getting Spring Fever a bit early this year.

I always do my homework at one of two coffee shops. Either the one he works at or Z's just down the street. I'm easy to find. A creature of habit. In the middle of my coffee-drinking-study-session boyfriend surprises me with a delicious new flavor of local ice cream! A sunny afternoon and the perfect time for a sweet treat. A much needed break with my favorite boy wasn't complete without ice cream mustaches.

I'm totally obsessed with the type used on Orchard Pig's cider bottles. The bright colors also have me hooked. How could drinking cider get more fun than this?

Stark Skincare is a completely natural and vegan friendly skincare brand. I've been looking for a more natural remedy for my skincare and think this may be a winner. The label is designed by Poly Print & Digital Design. They have amazing work! So glad I found them.

This chocolate would be the perfect party favor for a spring wedding. I love florals and these prints have stolen my heart. New Yorkers - let me know how it is!

Christopher Elbow Chocolates and Glace Ice Cream are Kansas City staples. They're both made here locally and are definitely a treat if you're ever passing through. Glace only opened last summer and I had my first taste today! It was such a treat. So rich and creamy. I love the simplicity of Elbow's packaging. It is very iconic around here. Something everyone recognizes. I also like the similar color scheme in both brands. You know they go together without seeming too matchy matchy. xo, rv

Up until a few weeks ago pants were my last resort when getting dressed. That has changed since getting these hot pink pants. I absolutely adore them. In my opinion, they go with everything. Every time I wear this dress with this belt I feel like Mrs. Claus. I think it's just the mixing of the colors. Paring the combination with black boots probably is not helping matters. Today's my day off. I can't wait to spend it catching up, organizing my closet, and cutting out a new dress pattern. Wearing tights and dresses is my go-to ensemble. It's what I 'throw on' when I can't think of anything else to wear. As much as I love wearing tights I'm still getting antsy for warmer weather and bare legs. It doesn't help that here in the Midwest winter has seemed to have escaped us. We haven't even had two inches of snow yet! Life Lately. Over the Weekend.

Early Saturday morning the UPS man dropped of boyfriend's new camera! We, well mostly he, spent the better part of the weekend figuring out its settings and taking lots and lots of photographs. We went to the fabric store and found the perfect fabric. I'm making a bicycle dress for Spring! We visited lots of cute downtown shops and went on an afternoon cupcake date. We had Sunday Morning brunch with vegetarian biscuits & gravy. Yum! I read darling children's books and he took sunlight pictures. We admired drawings and petted pretty kitties. The weather was perfect. We're sad it's already Monday. xo, rv

Knife Pleats

I've never been able to master the art of wearing knife pleats. They just look weird. Or at least I feel like they look weird. It's probably because I went to Catholic School most of my life and they just remind me of my uniform. Which is also plaid. Plaid and knife pleats just don't mix in my book. I've had this skirt for probably three years and this is maybe the second time I've worn it. Maybe it'd look better with a polo and knee-high socks. Just kidding! xo, rv

Camera Problems

On Tuesday, my day off, I dropped my camera. The first time ever. It wasn't good. Cameras are like gold to bloggers. First, it wouldn't do anything. Then it started to take pictures again. Hooray! The only problem is - the auto-focus won't work. That's kind of a problem so I sent it away to Nikon in California. It won't even get there until Monday and I just can't be without a camera for more than a day.

I bought a new one. A new camera. Not a fancy SLR but a tiny point and shoot. I haven't had a point and shoot since seventh grade and had been itching to get one. Sometimes I just don't want to lug around my big camera. You know? So this little bump in the road was the perfect excuse to just bite the bullet and go for it.

Now, I'm the proud owner of a Nikon CoolPix S4100. It's even plum my favorite color. I'm excited. xo, rv

This is the most adorable packaging to encourage children to eat their fruits and vegetables. It'd definitely make me eat mine. I love the the bold colors and block lettering. To see more check here.

Mood Garden Tea Company is a delightful little company. They produce loose leaf Fair Trade tea to their customers. The best part is that it is sold in tea bags which makes it so much easier to use on the go rather than your typical loose leaf tea. I love the watercolor paint inspired flowers on their packaging. Hopefully someday I'll be able to try some for myself.

The fresh wooden packaging from Tay Clean and Pure has stolen my heart. I love the modern design and it's 100% eco-friendly. No two bottles look exactly the same. I also love how many of their products are multi-functional.

Phoenix Botanicals is a herbal cosmetic company created for your wild heart & body. Their packaging is made from recycled-paper materials including Washi paper tape. I love the simple flower designs and colorful tape touches. Everything is made with locally wild-crafted and organic plants. Every product is moisturizing and therapeutic. I'd love to try their wild rose balm.

In my opinion, every girl needs a pair of hot pink pants. Especially to wear on holidays like Valentine's Day. I debated buying these pants for awhile. Like two hours. Half my Saturday night shift at Gap. I didn't need them but boy did I want them. They're actually more of a fuchsia in person. I fell in love with them after a co-worker persuaded me into trying them on. The persuading obviously wasn't that hard being I was already pretty sure I needed them. Too Tired

I'm one of those people that believes she doesn't need to sleep. Really, ever. My natural circadian rhythm is to stay up until two or three and wake up around nine. That doesn't really work when you have eight a.m. classes. But when it's time to go to bed I can never convince myself of that. Last night I was really really tired. More tired than I have been in a long time. I came home from sewing class and literally fell asleep almost right way. In my coat, dress, boots, and everything else I was wearing and my heating blanket on. About four and a half hours later I woke-up from being so hot. I got up, striped, brushed my teeth, and despite the fact that my neighbor was having a party, I fell right back to sleep and didn't wake up until a little after nine this morning. I slept for basically fourteen hours straight. Oh my gosh. Have a lovely Saturday night! xo, rv

Fitz & the Tantrums

I love Fitz & the Tantrums. They're quite Jazzy. I always knew I liked Jazz music. Kansas City is known for their Jazz District so it's only natural. But I never knew I liked Jazzy music until now. Maybe there isn't' a difference between Jazz and Jazzy but I think there is. Fitz & the Tantrums have another song called MoneyGrabber which is more well known. You may have heard it before.

I love listening to them on my, almost daily, Lawrence to Kansas City and Kansas City to Lawrence drive.

In other news, I'm taking a stamping class tonight at Paper Source. I've been excited about it all week. I've never taken a stamping class before. It's going to be good. Real great. I'll be sure and report back with the outcome. xo, rv

The Goodness Project

The Goodness Project is my most recent thing. Obsession. Hobby? Whatever you want to call it. It stems from my insane need to document everything. The book itself is from Elise Joy's Etsy Shop. Which I adore. I love bright colors and paper things. It's perfect.

A new business card idea. Complete with my very own custom stamp. Best purchase of 2012; so far. I'm debating adding twine to the ends. I stamped five different colors of tags. I love them.

I'd choose tea over coffee anytime. I like that it's re-steepable and coffee keeps my up at night. Sometimes I wish I still worked at a coffee shop. Sometimes I miss smelling like espresso all the time.

A Billy Joel quote. For the first probably six months I lived in my apartment I only listened to Billy Joel and Neal Young. I'd marry Neal Young if I had the chance. My favorite. Before now I didn't even realize both of these facing pages were music related. I was making these while my upstairs neighbor was tracking drums for something he was recording. Maybe that had something to do with the musicness of these pages. I live alone and I love the noise my neighbors make. Mostly I feel like I live in a boarding house instead of an apartment building.

I made this page with Zots from Paper Source. Which I only discovered this past week. My bank account is thankful for that; I however, am not. The facing page is randomly sewn with my sewing machine and created while I was taking a break from some grueling math homework. It was also raining.

I live in apartment six. Which is my very favorite number. I like writing it on everything. Just like my first grade crush. Remember those days? I like it because it flips to a nine. I'm also dyslexic. It's both a blessing and a curse. But mostly a blessing. Most people don't know about this about me. xo, rv

Last Thursday I got the bright idea to buy some straight leg jeans. Never in my life have I thought more about denim before working at Gap. Here is my clean craft table. It never looks this clean so I had to Instax it. Photographs are my only proof. The only way I can remember important events. I'm getting old you know. Wall Air Conditioners

My apartment, which is over 100 years old, has a wall air conditioner. Which I hate and have an undying urge to 'dress-up' in some way. And by some way I mean anyway. I will seriously do anything to make this tiny section of my 500 square feel more cute. I'm thinking of painting around it.. Maybe a light or medium blue color.. or orange. I'm really into orange lately. It has a window above it where some pretty orange curtains hang. Is orange on orange too weird? There are also DIY letters that spell out JOY above the air conditioner. Modern Women's Shoes // The Comfy Kind

I work twelve hour shifts at a hospice. There, I have to wear fancy dress clothes which I never complain about because, in my book, it's just another reason to buy more clothes. Not that I need a reason... But you know - a good justification is sometimes necessary. Comfy shoes are a must. Happy feet make for a happy girl. Always a plus.

Modern women's shoes run the gamut from classic to ultra-modern. Some women make serious mistakes by purchasing shoes that are not suitable for their profession or their daily task about town. A pair of women's comfort shoes would certainly be perfect if you are the type of woman who is constantly on the move and traveling around town during the day. High heeled pumps, peep toe shoes, and towering wedges should wait for another suitable occasion.

Finding a pair of women's comfort shoes takes a bit of time and serious hunting today. Let's face it. The most modern and stylish shoes are usually the one's that pinch your toes and make it almost impossible to walk without feeling very uncomfortable. Any shoe that does not fit properly is not going to be very comfortable.

Another frequent mistake is relying completely on the manufacturers sizing chart. Never rely completely on the manufacturers sizing chart because sizing differs between manufacturers. A size 8 manufactured by one company might fit more like a size 7 that is manufactured by a competing brand. Keep this fact in mind when purchasing your next pair of shoes.

Look for shoes that are manufactured with a round natural toe. Avoid the very high stiletto heels at all cost. They are dangerous and might cause heel or foot issues down the line. Purchase pumps with a moderate heel height or flats that are comfortable to walk in and that also provide adequate support for the foot.

This week has gone by so fast. I can't believe it's already Friday but I'm so glad we've made it. I'm finally feeling better and have been taking cough medicine every 12 hours on the dot. I've been drinking sore throat tea from Celestial Seasonings all week and it's helping so much. Best late night Wal-Mart purchase ever.

Basically all you need to know right now is that it's the weekend. And my BFF Carly is coming to Lawrence with me tonight. Whoo! Sick Days // Tuesday Trade

All I want to do today is lay in bed. But alas it is my first day of school. Funny how that happens. I had a five week break and today... today! I wake up with a stuffy nose, sore throat, and ear infection. I haven't had one of those since I was about two.

I'm not very good at blowing my nose in public. This should make a great first day of school. Off to hunt down some cold medicine and vitamin C. I'll let you know how it all goes.

I'm not quite sure what the importance of 'elevator shaft' spray painted on this building is. I'm almost positive there isn't even an elevator inside this building. It's not really not that important anyway. Plus, it's spelled wrong. Downtown Kansas City is one of my favorite places to take outfit pictures. An Average Collage Meal

This is an average college meal... at least for me. I'm always vegetarian and mostly vegan. I so wish I could commit to being totally vegan but it's really not in my time frame or budget at them moment. Someday though, someday.

I usually eat with every meal: drink (tea or water) // protein (lentil soup) // starch (pita) // something extra (black olives).

In between meals I snack on veggies fruit and nuts. They're my all time favorites. My something other is almost always pickles and/or olives. Definitely my guilty pleasures.

Oh, and Devendra Banhart on the record player never hurts.

You may know that I work at a hospice. Awkward and funny things happen quite frequently over there. For instance... yesterday morning I was walking into work. I had about a million things in my hands and was almost running late. I have my hands full and am fishing for my badges in my bag and opening the door with my other hand? I guess I had three hands yesterday morning. Anyway, a tampon falls out of my purse and I don't realize it but the man behind me does. He graciously picks it up and hands it to me saying, "I think you dropped this miss." He giggles and I smile and thank him. I proceed to run into this man three or four times throughout my twelve hour shift. Every time he shyly giggles. And that my friends, was my awkward Wednesday. xo, rv

Reading Directions

I'll be the first to admit that I don't particularly like reading directions. I'd much rather just figure it all out myself. I should also tell you that my apartment is freezing and I have a heating blanket and two space heaters to prove it. Usually when I leave I just unplug my space heaters to turn them off instead of turning them off and then unplugging them. It's quicker. Every time I do this I the outlets spark which is obviously because there is still live electricity running through the cords. I didn't realize this before this morning. Before today I just chalked the sparking up to the fact that my apartment is over 100 years old. It's vintage I tell ya. So instead of almost starting mini fires every morning I'm vowing to read directions more often. Adding that one to my New Year's to-do list.

Menswear Inspired

When I got dressed this morning I was in no way inspired by a man. But as I edit this post at my favorite coffee shop the male barista is wearing a very similar version of this outfit. So similar that I may have to go home and change. Just kidding. The only difference is that his bow tie is one of those tiny boy ones and mine is a rather excentric vintage scarf. We're both even wearing jean button ups too. I mean, the average college student probably doesn't even own a jean button up let alone wear it in public... But him and I. Oh, we do.

I'm pretty sure he noticed the similarity too. I completed him on his outfit and he giggled and looked down at mine. He answered with, "You have good taste as well." Ha. Was that a backwards compliment being we're wearing the same thing that he basically just said that he has good taste too? I'm thinking way too into this. I'm blaming it on a case of the Mondays. xo, rv

P/S: I would have taken a picture for you but I'm pretty sure he would have noticed. And because we live in the same town and that town being a small town I'm pretty sure we'll run into each other again. So it'd be too weird if he caught me snapping iPhone pictures of him. I guess I should work on my slyness. Just for instances like this.

Sunday Swoon // An Inspiring Home

I moved into my very first apartment in August and have had so much fun decorating. I love changing things around and creating little displays of my favorite items. I only have 500 square feet so I have had to be pretty creative with my space.

1. This couch is to die for! I love the yellow and the darling stitched pattern. So sweet.

2. This is the perfect inspiration when decorating a shared space. I don't often like matching anything but these matching twin beds fit in perfect with the other decor.

3. My favorite idea. A chalk bathroom. Whenever I buy my first house and can do whatever I want to it... I'm doing this. I love how you can change it whenever you want.

4. This chain link shelf is such a neat idea. I love industrial touches mixed in with vintage in houses. The painted exposed brick wall also tickles my fancy.

5. This idea of covering a piece of plywood with fabric is wonderful. It sort of doubles as wallpaper. I have a love for fabric so this could definitely come in handy.

6. The collection of trinkets and artwork on the far wall is something I've been wanting to do for awhile. I love the mismatched perfection.

7. The midcentury furniture collection in this space is so beautiful. Tell me, where do you find such a beautiful collection?

8. This kitchen is so cute! I especially love the checkered floor and the sleeping puppy really ties things together.

9. The multi colored tiles in this bathroom are my favorite. Whenever I buy a house this is happening in the master bathroom.

10. This little girl's room is so precious. Doesn't it just look like so much fun?

The other day I stumbled across this striped dress at Gap. It was actually Gap Kids. Sorry, I'm a bad liar. I know what you're thinking... You work there. Anyway, I've been pretty into stripes lately so I'm sure you could imagine my excitement. I should also add that it's yellow. Plus one. A Knitting & Panera Date

I just love the feeling of starting a new project with perfectly wound balls of yarn and a fresh pattern. The Catcher in the Rye

I was so excited when Bri sent me this darling yellow skirt. Her and I both adore all things yellow. So, I knew immediately that I'd pair it with my favorite The Catcher in the Rye t-shirt.

This outfit is the perfect example of something I'd wear running errands, having coffee, record store shopping, or even out to the bookstore to knock out some emailing and posting. It's the perfect mix of comfy and put together.

A Summary.

The Catcher in the Rye is set around the 1950's and is narrated by the protagonist Holden Caulfield. Holden is undergoing treatment in a mental hospital when the story opens. Basically the entire book is is a flashback of events that eventually lead up to his emotional breakdown. The flashbacks begin right before Christmas break when Holden is leaving the boarding school his parents sent him to.

There are many conflicts holden faces in this novel. The two main ones are Holden vs. himself and Holden vs. society. He fails to see the good in anyone and believes everyone is a phony. Holden also has trouble accepting growing up and the loss of innocence children face. He does not want children to grow up into adults because he believes all adults are corrupt. He believes that children are innocent because they view the world without any bias.

There's so much to the story but that's all I'll tell you. I don't want to give away any of the surprises.

Family Christmas Card Attempts

A lot of you have asked about my family lately and if I have any siblings. I do! But since I don't live with them they don't come up on here very often. I have two younger brothers who are eighteen and fifteen. They both live with my parents in Kansas City while I live in Lawrence.

We're all in Florida right now and Mama Bear wanted to attempt at getting a Christmas card... The first photograph is the only decent one amoung many outtakes. Needless to say we were all tired and silly at this point of the night. Does your family take family Christmas pictures? Any tips for getting them just right? I'd love to know. xo, rv

The Warmest Winter

Darling Christmas decorations.

Hackney's was so delicious! Malori was right. Anytime you visit a new city I would definitely recommend finding someone who knows the city to give you recommendations. It's so helpful. Mama had a delicious burger and I had a grilled cheese with a crunchy pickle and french fries. Delicious. I didn't stick to my vegan ways in Chicago. New Bangs & Purple Lipstick

Yesterday, after my math final, I got my bangs cut and perfected my purple lipstick wearing techniques. I'm pretty pleased about both.

The bangs thing. I love bangs. I love having bangs. I hate making hair appointments. And I'm only sometimes a decent haircutter. What usually happens is this: I get them cut, I start trimming them for a couple months until they get really out of whack and then, I finally give in and make a salon appointment. Afterwards I promise myself that I'll stick to it and get 'em cut monthly at a salon. This never happens. Self-promises are not always kept. But they're always worth a try. xo, rv

A Favorite Block in Kansas City

This block is my most favorite part of Kansas City. It's called the Crossroads Arts District and home to one of my favorite monthly events called First Friday's.

It's full of darling & eclectic little shops on 18th & Baltimore. One of which I interned with for a little bit.

The darling shops on the block are: YJ's Snack Bar, Peggy Noland Kansas City, Spool, & Birdies. Each one has something special to offer.

YJ's serves the best daily meals and the meanest iced vanilla latte in KC.

Peggy Noland never ceases to maze me with her creative garnets and patterns.

Spool sells an eclectic mix of vintage, new, and handmade clothing and jewelry. They also have an adorable baby section that my someday kid will definitely be sporting.

Birdies is hands down the best lingerie store in KC. And oh the darling decor...

My most favorite time of day at YJ's.

Holiday Treats // From Manzanita

Hi An Eclectic Heap readers! My name is Rebecca and I am the lady behind manzanita. I am stopping by today to give you all a little DIY on how to make one of my favorite holidays treats.

It has been extra cold here in Boulder, CO this past week! When the weather gets like this all I want to do is cuddle up with my little dogs and drink a steamy cup of hot chocolate. So here are my instructions to make a yummy hot chocolate from your favorite chocolate candy bars...

Chocolove makes the best chocolate ever and I love how they always include a little love poem inside the wrapper.

Marshmallows and peppermint are two of my favorite toppings but you could substitute these with anything. I also really like coconut and caramel!

Chop up your chocolate bar until it looks like this. A serrated knife seems to work the best.

Prepare your toppings.

Spoon the chocolate into a pot with milk or a milk substitute. I love almond milk, so that is what I used! mix the chocolate until it is completely melted into the milk.

Fill your cup and cuddle up! I like to sprinkle a little cinnamon to top it all off.

Instax Mini vs. Instax Wide

Lately, I have been getting many questions about my instant photographs and what kind of camera I use to take them. I have two instant cameras. The Instax Wide 210 and the Instax Mini. Both do the same thing. One just takes larger pictures than the other.

My favorite thing about these cameras is that once you take a picture you get to see it in print in less than three minutes. I have thousands of photographs saved on my computer that I have never printed. In my opinion, it's definitely the biggest downfall to the digital age. I love a tangible product. An instant camera changes all that.

I also love how the photographs from the different cameras come out the same height. So much easier for display purposes.

If I had to choose I'd just buy the Instax Mini. It's a lot smaller than the Instax Wide 210 and it has definitely become my go to camera. It fits perfectly in my camera bag alongside my digital camera. I love having a choice when I'm out and about.

For more film goodies; a really neat website to check out is The Impossible Project. It's a project based all around instant film. Neat! I also love checking out the group's pool on flickr. It's super inspiring for film and digital users alike.

New Projects // A New Year

I have been working hard on many handmade ideas for 2012. Most of them have to do with one of my favorite medias... yarn! My mother taught me how to knit one Christmas Break. I instantly fell in love with the craft.

I'll be opening a new Etsy Shop with my handmade goodies in 2012. I can't decide if it'll have just handmade or vintage too. What do you think? Separate? Or together? I'd love to hear your advice? xo, rv

A Blue Blazer

Blazers are one of my favorite things to dress up an outfit with. I love how they seem to pull everything together. I was so excited when I got this one in the mail.

In my opinion, it ties together this entire outfit. Tailored ones seem to work the best on my frame.

Do you have any recommendations on how to make hair grow faster? I'm at a loss. Obviously, I also need by bangs trimmed. Next week?

A Kansas Sunset

One of my most favorite things about living in Kansas/Missouri my entire life are the pretty sunrises and sunsets on a daily basis. I have the pleasure of seeing most of them because I awake before the sun and watch it rise as I drive to school and/or work. I see it set most days on my way home. I feel lucky to be able to celebrate the little things. Pretty sunsets are always a reason to smile. xo, rv

iPhone Cover Edition // Sunday Swoon

Here's the deal. I'm finally getting an iPhone. Finally. And I'm so excited about it. Now I need a neat cover for it. I've been searching... Here's what I've found.

1. I love the pattern on this case. Since I'm a sewer I love anything with a measuring tape.

2. Chevron has a warm place in my heart. I'm so in love with anything chevron. Eeep!

3. Foxes are one of my favorite animals. Owls are number one but foxes are a close second. I love this fox case. So cute.

4. This vintage inspired mail case is so fun. Here's a little secret. I love shopping online so much because I love getting packages in the mail. It's a double win.

5. I adore this patterned phone case. It's so fun and quirky. I could never choose a color though.

6. Drinking tea is one of my favorite things. This whimsical teacup case is beyond cute!

7. I'm leaning most toward this case. It's the perfect mix of all my favorite colors and my most beloved chevron. I think it's a winner but I'm still keeping my options open.

8. Wooden things are another favorite of mine. I'd definitely be happy with this case as well. I love the tiny butterfly and detailed flowers. So sweet.

9. I LOVE the colors and pattern on this case. It reminds me of my long days spent playing around with Adobe Illustrator. One of my most favorite computer programs.

10. Houndstooth is another favorite pattern of mine. This case is from the same shop as the chevron case. I adore them both.

Fake Fur & Teal Tights // Daily Outfit

One of my favorite things to add to outfits is colored tights. You've probably noticed this if you've been reading for awhile. It's a super easy thing to add to otherwise neutral outfits. And a fun way to add a pop of color. My favorite places to buy tights are Target, J.Crew, and American Apparel. In my opinion American apparel tights hold up the best. The seem to never get holes in them which is a very important aspect for an obsessive tights wearer. What places do you recommend to buy tights? xo, rv

Chevron Love

It's no secret that I love chevron anything. So when I found this sweater vest at a thrift store I was so excited. It's so versatile. To see more of my chevron lovin' check out the rug I made a few months ago here. It's holing up so well. I had never spray painted something before that would be walked on a lot so I didn't know how it would fare. Turns out; pretty well! I'm impressed. xo, rv

A New Poncho // Daily Outfit

I love anything involving one yard of fabric. If I'm visiting a new fabric store on vacation, and find something I love, I'll buy just one yard of it to satisfy my craving. So one yard patterns are a win in my book. When I saw this adorable DIY poncho on A Beautiful Mess I knew I had to make it. So fun, quick, and easy. I added bias tape around the neck to finish it off. I love the end result. xo, rv

Picture Frame DIY // Austin Eavesdropper

Hi Eclectic Heap readers! My name is Tolly Moseley.

My husband and I just bought our first house, and for months, we've been trying to make it a little cuter! We had some very basic tasks to accomplish first -- such as, planting grass -- but now, we're happily at the wall art stage. I started getting into toy film cameras recently, so I got the idea to mount some of my latest shots in the living room.

A friend of my named Jeremy Hidalgo runs an awesome new business called Imaginarium, which creates mod-looking picture frame borders. So I enlisted his help for the task. Together, we brainstormed the "look" I wanted for my borders -- colors, style, etc. -- and Jeremy came up with some options for me. I decided on a brown, wood grain-esque border, and for this particular photo, a green interior swatch.

I'm so pleased with the result! So today, I'm going to show you the easiest craft project in the world: How to give your pictures a more exciting border.

STEP ONE: Select a photo you would like to use, then, select and/or produce your border. I recommend checking out Imaginarium, since their border mats are not only attractive but affordable. If you go that route, like I did, Jeremy will ask you some questions about the colors in your room, your personal style, whether you want solid interior swatches or patterns, etc. They've got a handful of different border shape options, too.

If you go the production route, choose heavy cardstock paper (or thicker) for your border. Cut out your photograph's "window" using the dimensions of the photograph itself. You may even want to cut your window to be just a teensy bit smaller than that.

STEP TWO: Select your backing mat. This will create your interior swatch. Make sure it's dimensions match that of the border; both of mine here are 11" x 14."

STEP THREE: Line up your photo inside its window, and tape it to the backside.

(Make sure it lines up just right!)

STEP FOUR: Now put your two layers inside the frame: Picture border first (with your photo taped to it), and behind that, your back mat. Et voila! You are done!

1. Urban-Posture has some of the most adorable letterpress gifts. I absolutely love these binder dividers. They'd make school so much fun.

2. iamhome is art for the home created by Sarah and Joseph Belknap. I particularly love this striped wooden piece. I adore it's texture. It's wonderful in person.

3. YellowGrey is an adorable shop with really unique pieces. I especially adore this yellow wrap bracelet. Anything that wraps is a win in my book.

4. Ashley Buchanan cuts all of her jewelry out of sheet metal. Her intricate designs make my heart skip a beat. So pretty! This one is one of my favorites. Be sure to check out her inspiring blog.

5. Meg Stevens creates these beautiful felted pillows by hand. They're one-of-a-kind and to die for. Mustard yellow always wins my heart. Be sure to check out Meg's blog too.

6. PLYtextiles is an amazing shop full of modern designs and salvaged materials. I love this geometric hexagon pillow. It'd go perfect with my blue love seat couch.

7. Squasht is a local Chicago boutique with darling items handmade by Lesley. I picked up a couple at Renegade and can't wait to wear them. This is a favorite I haven't seen in person but is available online.

8. Uncommon Handmade is another new favorite of mine. These rustic flowers are so quirky and adorable. I would love to have them in my apartment. So sweet; flowers that never die.

9. Juli Sherry creates these colorful cables for your headphones, earbuds, and even iPod cables. I could certainly use a pair being only one side of my headphones works at the moment.

10. Nourishing Notes is a shop full of hilarious prints, towels, and aprons all relating to the foodie in you. So cute. I especially love this one. It needs to be next to my sink.

Renegade Chicago has been an inspiring and awesome experience. Going to Renegade is like walking into a real Etsy store. You have to see it to believe it. It's so much fun meeting the artists first hand and being able to talk to them about their processes and techniques.

Photo or Place Card Holder DIY // From After Nine to Five

Hi there! I'm Ashley from over at After Nine To Five. The holidays are a really busy time of the year for everyone so I wanted to share a super easy tutorial (15 minutes!) to add a bit of holiday cheer to your decor without breaking the bank.

Super easy and really cheap decor that can be used for different holidays and events.

Wood Photo Blocks (Purchased from Oriental Trading)
Scissors
Mod Podge
Ribbon
A 12"x12" sheet of scrapbooking paper
Stickers

I used cotton balls as snow since it was a Christmas related holder, but you could cover the top and the bottom of the photo block with more paper, ribbons, stickers, etc for other holidays or events.

Wrap the paper around the photo block with some hanging off the edge. Cover all four sides by gluing the paper to the block with Mod Podge.

Trim the excess paper off on all sides so the paper is even on all sides/corners of the block.

Decorate with whatever supplies you have! For the "snow," I just pulled the cotton balls apart and put a small amount of Mod Podge to hold it in place. The rest were stickers that I put on each side and then I tied a bow that I slipped in the photo holder. REALLY easy, and cheap to make a lot of them if using as place card holders.
